Witherbee Holiday Lighting Contest

Cold days, long nights and leaves spread all over the lawn meant it was time to take your holiday lights out of storage and join neighbors in the second WNA holiday lighting contest. Homes nominated were in the Witherbee Neighborhood Boundaries (between 33rd and 56th Streets and ‘O’ to Randolph Streets).

Even though the temperatures for the first three weeks in December were 7.1 degrees below normal, down from the 4 to 6 degrees above normal that we were used to the last four years, and snow covered the ground most of the time, many neighbors braved the cold and decorated for the season. If you haven't taken the time to drive through the neighborhood to see the lights print the list of nominated addresses and take a look. The scenes, outlines, colors, ornaments, blinking or steady lights are wonderful to see and show the holiday spirit is alive.

Local businesses were solicited to donate prizes for the event and the response was great. Prizes included:

  • The elite lamp from Lincoln Lighting Center (40th & O Street)
  • Free Haircut from Pink Flamingo (40th & O Street)
  • Free Pedicure from Perfect Ten Nails (36th & O Street)
  • $30 in meal deal cards from Runza
  • $70 in coupon(s) from Perkins (48th & O Street)

Our celebrity judges, City Council member Dan Marvin and Journal Star reporter Jonnie Taté Finn were escorted around the neighborhood by the Lighting Chair Person Karen Vogeley and Doug Evans to judge the registered locations the evening of December 17th. Each location was judged on effective use of lights, decorations, creativity and overall appearance.

First Place and bragging rights go to Randy and Kathy Kaufman, 5101 M Street along with the use of the WNA First Place Award Sign.

Runner up residences are at 4300 Witherbee Boulevard and 5041 L Street. The prizes have been awarded and the winners have been invited to the next WNA meeting on January 5th to receive recognition for their efforts.
